Winter in the mountains is a time when color is typically muted, but a contrast in light and geometric patterns formed in the snow are wonderfully pronounced. The dynamic natural processes direct changes in temperature , wind speed and direction, time of day, sun angle, presence or absence of clouds, and an experience one must earn by rising and starting at day break when the new day begins. Snow shoeing into the back country is a journey of solitude accompanied by the elements of an unforgiving environment, but so richly rewarding for those prepared to enter.
